Five for Friday: September 4th

Happy Friday! I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for 5 for Friday.

This has been a great week! My students are surprising and inspiring me left and right.

I love to teach kids the meaning of details using a cake. I use this example to make the meaning of details more tangible. I ask if they would rather have a plain cake with vanilla frosting or a cake with blue frosting and Sponge Bob characters all over it. Needless to say, they want the more detailed cake. I give them a cake to decorate with details. Check out my freebie!

This week we have been working on the trait Ideas and adding detail to writing. Like I mentioned above, I teach my kids the meaning of the word using a cake. Then, using my Interactive Writing Notebook, we use details to describe food.

I am so convinced, the best teaching ideas come to me while teaching. So, I mentioned that the kids wrote sentences for each food item. I had them share with the class and asked the class to rate their sentences using the cake rubric pictured. They scored the sentences accurately! They could even explain why!!! OMG!

I wrote a post about getting started with stations. Now my students are ready to work independently. Yay! I believe it is so important to have students work independently. Read this post if you're having trouble getting started.

Over the summer I looked on Scholastic's website to order these books for $1.00. They were gone! Noooooooo! I ordered some books the other day and they were back! Yaaaaaaay! I even emailed them over the summer begging them to bring the book back. I buy one book for each student. We read it together. They L-O-V-E this book! So do I.

Thanks for stopping by! Stop by Doodle Bugs Teaching to read some more!

  1. Stacy,
First off - your blog is adorable! Secondly, your cake idea for teaching about adding details is brilliant! I find myself saying "let's add details" a lot the first week, but this is a great way help them visualize what that means. Cute!
